The Previous Rebbe taught that a birthday is a time for introspection, a time to account for the past and make resolutions for the future. It is a most propitious time, for on one’s birthday his “mazel”—his “fortune”—radiates with extra strength. On one’s birthday he should get together with friends and discuss the meaning of the occasion—that becoming a year older means he is growing in his closeness to G-d. When a child is old enough, this should be explained to him on his level as well. Some may object that this was never done before, but clearly there are more negative influences and events in the world now, so for our part we must increase in holiness. In fact, the only reason the negative exists in the first place is to cause a greater increase in holiness and goodness. |

Celebrating birthdays helps! It is reassuring to learn that our Rabbis bless the concept of joyously celebrating our birthdays. This is something pertinent in my life! I have kept a "birthday book" for as long as I can remember. For most of the people in my book I say a prayer for them since I have so many birthdays in this book that I can get too busy. For my closest family I try to send a card by mail. For years I would make the cards. This is a kind of artwork for me. It's nice to know that my actions have really helped to make people happier!
